Depuis plusieurs années, les chercheurs en psychologie sociale ont démontré jusqu’à quel point il s’avère difficile de corriger de fausses informations une fois que celles-ci ont été mises en circulation (Schwarz, 2007). En ce qui concerne la capacité des PME à mettre en œuvre des pratiques d’écoconception, plusieurs organisations internationales (OECD, 2009) ou nationales (Industrie Canada, 2009) ont rapidement perçu l’importance du phénomène et ont émis des recommandations afin d’informer et de guider les dirigeants d’entreprise en ce qui a trait au développement de nouveaux produits mieux arrimés au développement durable. Or, ces premières prescriptions se basent le plus souvent, d’une part, sur des données partielles qui sont généralisées à l’ensemble des PME ainsi que, d’autre part, sur une connaissance approximative de l’écoconception et une série d’idées préconçues sur la nature et le fonctionnement des PME manufacturières. L’écoconception y est présentée comme une pratique dont les exigences techniques et financières la rendent difficilement utilisable par une PME.
