O artigo apresenta reflexões de natureza téorica sobre a noção de accountability, problematizando seu caráter polissêmico e as mudanças de sentido quando é tranposta do campo político para o campo da educação. Apresenta uma síntese dos limites e problemas suscitados pelas novas formas de accountability e pelos instrumentos de regulação dos estabelecimentos escolares e sua vinculação ao regime pós-burocrático dos sistemas de ensino, inspirado no modelo do Estado avaliador. Referenciando-se numa abordagem sociológica das teorias da confiança, as análises evidenciam os efeitos potencialmente diferenciados dos sistemas de accountability e as condições de confiança nas instituições.
