L’effet de l’allongement de la durée de la formation initiale sur l’âge à la première naissance et sur la durée écoulée sans enfant depuis la fin des études est examiné à la lumière d’une analyse biographique portant sur 10 161 biographies d’hommes et de femmes, recueillies lors de ­l’Enquête sociale générale (ESG, cycle 15) de 2001 menée par Statistique Canada. Il ressort que l’effet le plus important du prolongement de la durée de la formation initiale est, d’une part, d’élever l’âge à la première naissance et, d’autre part, de contribuer à l’augmentation de l’infécondité, particulièrement chez les femmes. Par contre, chez les hommes, la durée écoulée entre la fin des études et l’arrivée du premier enfant est négativement associée à l’allongement de la durée des études. Toutefois, quel que soit le sexe, le prolongement des études est associé à une faible propension à devenir parent pour la première fois. Pour un homme, cette transition s’ins­crit dans la perspective de l’émancipation individuelle dont l’établissement professionnel est l’un des facteurs clés alors qu’au sortir des études, une femme qui travaille est moins susceptible d’avoir un premier enfant. Enfin, nos résultats confirment la persistance du modèle traditionnel d’établissement familial différencié selon les sexes.
