Voies nouvelles pour l'histoire du Premier EmpireJean-Luc Chappey RÉFÉRENCEVoies nouvelles pour l'histoire du Premier Empire, textes réunis et présentés par Natalie Petiteau, Paris, La Boutique de l'Histoire, 2003, 302 p., ISBN 2-910828-27-1.1 Issu d'un colloque organisé par l'Université d'Avignon, cet ouvrage offre une série de contributions de spécialistes qui ont récemment renouvelé en profondeur l'étude de la période impériale.Dans une introduction particulièrement stimulante, Natalie Petiteau, maître d'œuvre de l'ouvrage, souligne les renouvellements historiographiques importants dont cette période a été l'objet ces dernières années.Longtemps centrée sur une histoire plus ou moins admirative du personnage de Napoléon Bonaparte ou cantonnée aux frontières de l'histoire militaire, l'Empire constitue désormais un champ d'études novatrices pour comprendre les logiques politiques, religieuses et sociales qui traversent une période qu'on ne peut désormais plus considérer en terme de « transition ».Au-delà des héritages revendiqués et construits selon les intérêts d'un pouvoir en construction, l'Empire constitue sans conteste une période d'innovations dont les résonances se font sentir pendant tout le XIXe siècle comme le souligne particulièrement la contribution de Jean-Marc Largeau consacrée à l'analyse de la « mémoire » de la bataille de Waterloo.En prenant le parti de considérer le régime impérial comme un champ d'expérimentations, les différentes contributions mettent en exergue son caractère empirique (rompant par-là avec les interprétations téléologiques) et novateur.
