Abstract
Russian parents are investigating educational strategies aimed at accelerating learner development, encouraging self-directed learning and establishing a foundation for continuous life-long learning. Many of these ideas are realized within the framework of Leonid V. Zankov’s experimental methodology, known as the “Zankov system”. This article describes the comprehensive teaching model Zankov developed for the early years level. His model is based on the assumption that appropriate teaching methods stimulate cognitive development; it implements in the classroom the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development of L. Vygotsky. Zankov system is a comprehensive educational system for elementary school that consists of the curricula, textbooks, and the network for teachers’ training.
