Abstract
Traveling can be challenging for people with the IBD because of concerns for disease recurrence and the complexity of using immune suppressing medications in countries where the risk of infection is high. However, with advanced planning and taking precautions, travel for IBD patients can be routine. Prior to travel, patients should ensure that all routine immunizations are up to date and additional vaccines should be considered after consulting a travel medicine clinic. Live virus and bacterial vaccines should be avoided in those who are on immunosuppressive therapies. Traveler's diarrhea is a significant problem that may be avoided by paying attention to food safety. Patients should be educated on self-treatment of traveler's diarrhea, including oral rehydration and antimicrobial agents. IBD patients should research their travel destinations and plan their itineraries prior to travel to accommodate personal needs and ensure bathroom access.
