This section presents revised versions of papers originally presented at the ASA's annual meeting, Boston, August 2008. My thanks to section co-editor Christena Nippert-Eng, Associate Editors Julie Amoroso, Jessica Collins and Jennifer Kayahara; Assistant Editor Sinye Tang; and to ICS editor Brian Loader for facilitating this special section. ICS also publishes a special CITASA issue in the year following each annual meeting. This introduction's title is an homage to my mentor, Charles Tilly (1986) Tilly, C. 1986.
