Abstract
Nous proposons, en nous appuyant sur les résultats des deux dernières enquêtes « Pratiques culturelles des Français » (1989,1997) de faire une présentation des univers culturels repérables à l’échelle de la population française, avant de nous interroger sur l’hybridation de la culture légitime. Quelles formes prend-elle ? Quelles mutations artistiques et sociales l’alimentent ? Quel(s) sens lui donner ? Il apparaît en effet que les modes de production, de diffusion et de légitimation des oeuvres et produits culturels ainsi que les formes de participation à la vie culturelle ont connu ces dernières décennies d’importantes mutations. Aussi, la représentation ternaire des rapports d’homologie entre milieux sociaux et consommations culturelles héritée de la sociologie critique — culture cultivée, culture moyenne, culture populaire — rend-elle de plus en plus difficilement compte de la complexité des propriétés symboliques des oeuvres et de la diversité des univers culturels des individus.
