Abstract
The views of Michael Roney, International Heavy Haul Association (IHHA) chairman and Canadian Pacific Railway technical standards general manager, are presented in regard to his vision for the IHHA and the challenges facing heavy haul railways. Challenges include increasing productivity through while reducing the problems associated with train lengthening; supply chain control; and economic concerns. Roney hopes to see a book written on heavy haul railway operations using shared experience as its basis to complement IHHA's Guidelines to Best Practices for Heavy Haul Railway Operations. Roney is already looking forward to the next IHHA conference, scheduled for June 2011 in Calgary, Canada. Its theme will be Railroading in Extreme Conditions and will examine railroad best practices for reliable high service maintenance in any type of weather condition.
