Abstract
Les encycliques et les campagnes diplomatiques et médiatiques de la fin du xixe siècle ont été une ultime tentative, pour le Vatican, de regagner un rôle international. Dans cette conjoncture, les liens parmi les catholiques du Vieux et du Nouveau Monde se sont resserrés et la diplomatie vaticane a utilisé ce rapprochement pour faire entendre ses protestations et retrouver une part de son influence. Au même moment, elle a essayé d’améliorer la récolte des renseignements dans les différents pays de la catholicité.
