Abstract
L'histoire urbaine connat depuis plusieurs dcennies une floraison de travaux qui participent au renouvellement de l'historiographie de l'poque moderne. La plupart d'entre eux se concentrent sur une ville, comme le fit en 1973 Jean-Claude Perrot dans une thse de rfrence Gense d'une ville moderne. Caen au XVIII e sicle . La dmarche adopte ici par Claude Nires, dont l'ouvrage est issu d'une thse de doctorat d'tat soutenue en 1987 l'Universit de Paris IV-Sorbonne, est autre. Plutt que d'isoler chacune des entits urbaines et d'tudier les relations qu'elles entretiennent entre elles ou avec un pays, il envisage le phnomne urbain au niveau d'une province -la Bretagne -dont les frontires ne varient gure depuis l'poque ducale, et pendant une priode -le XVIII e sicle -qui correspond l'installation et au dveloppement de l'Intendance, institution qui contribue l'intgration de la Bretagne l'espace franais par les tarifs commerciaux.
