Abstract
1L'histoire urbaine connaît depuis plusieurs décennies une floraison de travaux qui participent au renouvellement de l'historiographie de l'époque moderne.La plupart d'entre eux se concentrent sur une ville, comme le fit en 1973 Jean-Claude Perrot dans une thèse de référence Genèse d'une ville moderne.Caen au XVIII e siècle .La démarche adoptée ici par Claude Nières, dont l'ouvrage est issu d'une thèse de doctorat d'État soutenue en 1987 à l'Université de Paris IV-Sorbonne, est autre.Plutôt que d'isoler chacune des entités urbaines et d'étudier les relations qu'elles entretiennent entre elles ou avec un pays, il envisage le phénomène urbain au niveau d'une province -la Bretagne -dont les frontières ne varient guère depuis l'époque ducale, et pendant une période -le XVIII e siècle -qui correspond à l'installation et au développement de l'Intendance, institution qui contribue à l'intégration de la Bretagne à l'espace français par les tarifs commerciaux.
