Abstract
Canada’s effort to control bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB) began as early as 1897 in the form of a voluntary program in which the tuberculin skin test was offered free of charge to livestock owners and reactors were removed from the herd at the discretion of the owner without the payment of compensation. The approach of the Restricted Area Plan Initiated in 1923 proved successful; the first general test of all areas of Canada was complete by 1961 and the national prevalence was reduced from over 4% in 1923 to approximately 0.1%. The classification of provinces/areas based on their TB status was an effective approach in the latter stages of Canada’s eradication effort. The goal of Canada’s current national bovine TB eradication program is the detection and eradication of bovine TB to ensure the health of Canada's people, livestock, and wildlife.
