Abstract
Las beatas o mujeres excesivamente devotas son el blanco de los ataques del escri tor mexicano ilustrado Fern?ndez de Lizardi, quien quiere erradicar las supersti ciones que estas mujeres fomentan. Este empe?o se nota especialmente en sus no velas Vida de Periquillo Sarniento (1816) y La educaci?n de las mujeres o la Quijotita y su prima (1818). En esta ?ltima novela Fern?ndez de Lizardi incluye el personaje de una beata con rasgos que recuerdan a la Celestina. Del mismo modo que la Celestina usa la ret?rica para sus enga?os, la beata de Lizardi usa rezos y devociones para atraer a j?venes muchachas a una vida de irracionalidad religiosa y supersticiones que es comparable a los bajos fondos en los que Celes tina se mueve con sus pupilas. La protagonista de la novela termina como una paria social, obligada a prostituirse para sobrevivir. Las beatas y las alcahuetas, personajes ambos de la vida real del M?xico colonial en que Lizardi escribe, son presentadas como figuras femeninas negativas que subvierten la racionalidad que est? encarnada en el orden patriarcal de la familia de la que las beatas arrebatan a las j?venes.
