La fin du providentialisme et la montée de l'individualisme néolibéral figurent parmi les principaux éléments du diagnostic de notre mal de vivre social actuel. En filigrane, se déploie une critique de la modernité qui rappelle la nostalgie d'une certaine communauté perdue. Au moment de redéfinir ce qui constitue le « vivre-ensemble », il n'est pas superflu de proposer une relecture des différents concepts utilisés dans ces analyses. Celle-ci s'appuiera tant sur des réflexions théoriques sur les notions de modernité, d'individu et de communauté que sur des travaux récents sur le don, les réseaux sociaux et la vie de quartier. L'exercice invite à la prudence dans ce mouvement enthousiaste de valorisation des communautés locales et à la rigueur dans l'utilisation de concepts si fréquemment employés dans notre réflexion sur le lien social.
