Abstract
Abstract An association between addiction (and other substance‐related problems) and violence has been found across hundreds if not thousands of studies. Converging evidence from multiple countries exists across epidemiological, longitudinal, experimental, and meta‐analytic studies. Addiction is associated with numerous forms and severities of violence. Alcohol has the strongest and largest body of evidence as a (potentially causal) risk factor for violence. Stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines are also consistently found to be related to violence. Most major violence risk assessment instruments incorporate some index of addiction or other substance‐related problem as a risk factor. Four main explanatory models—psychopharmacological, systemic, economic compulsion, interactional—for the link between addiction and other substance‐related problems are reviewed.
