Abstract
La efectiva igualdad de derechos entre los sexos y el rechazo de todo tipo de discriminacion es un principio general de una verdadera educacion para la igualdad. El objetivo de este estudio es verificar empiricamente el grado en que este principio se ha reflejado en los contenidos desarrollados en los libros de texto de ciencias de la naturaleza y tecnologia para la Educacion Secundaria Obligatoria. El analisis de una treintena de libros de texto se ha concretado en buscar en texto e ilustraciones las figuras de mujeres cientificas y confirma que las mujeres practicamente no aparecen en ellos, de modo que las mujeres cientificas son un grupo invisible para los estudiantes de secundaria en sus libros de texto. Este sesgo de genero resulta especialmente lesivo para las chicas, pues al hurtarles referentes de su mismo genero, les impide reafirmar de forma positiva su autoestima y confianza en el estudio de ciencias. Como consecuencia, se refuerzan en las chicas algunas actitudes hacia la ciencia y tecnologia negativas como son escaso interes, cuando no rechazo, menor rendimiento escolar y baja eleccion de materias y carreras de ciencias en su formacion.
