Cet article examine les représentations de la variété du français chez des jeunes d’immersion française. À partir d’une étude ethnographique et sociolinguistique dans deux écoles intermédiaires de l’Ouest canadien, l’auteure examine les discours d’enseignants, d’administrateurs, de parents et de jeunes sur le français appris par ces derniers. Malgré le fait que les jeunes sont satisfaits de leur réussite en français, ils ne se sentent jamais à la hauteur lorsqu’ils parlent la langue. D’une part, l’idéologie dominante au Canada et ailleurs promeut un français normatif pour les apprenants de langue seconde. D’autre part, il faut avoir une certaine légitimité (avoir le droit, selon Bourdieu, 1978) afin de pouvoir faire partie du groupe qui parle français. En ce monde globalisant, l’acceptation de tous les locuteurs du français permettrait à la langue de se faire valoir davantage dans diverses sphères de la vie quotidienne.
