Abstract
Par l’application de la Loi sur les Indiens, la nature coloniale des relations unissant peuples autochtones et gouvernement fédéral s’est traduite par une sacralisation des réserves comme milieu naturel indien. Postulant l’association consubstantielle entre autochtonité et ruralité, on ne s’étonnera donc pas d’une présence urbaine qui, aux yeux du gouvernement, devient d’abord synonyme d’exode rural, puis d’une nécessaire dissolution culturelle dans la société « d’accueil ». Or, la ville est considérée aujourd’hui comme un véritable lieu de ralliement entre plusieurs Premières Nations, faisant de l’expérience urbaine une partie intégrante de la modernité autochtone. Si la présence autochtone urbaine a pu faire « mentir » les principes westphaliens de l’idéologie territoriale propre à l’État canadien qui les cantonnait culturellement et politiquement à l’univers pseudo-clos des réserves, elle dessine du même coup une nouvelle géographie, spécialement à partir de la ville.
