Pendant pres de trois mois, les travailleurs de huit des douze mines d’or de Kirkland Lake tentent d’obtenir sans succes la reconnaissance syndicale1. Leur greve, qui s’echelonne du 18 novembre 1941 au 12 fevrier 1942, permet de contester d’abord et avant tout le refus des dirigeants des mines de vouloir negocier avec le local 240 du syndicat Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers puis, dans la meme foulee, de reconnaitre celui-ci comme le representant legitime et officiel des travailleurs. Plus important encore, cette greve est declenchee au cœur de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, dans une industrie alors jugee essentielle a l’effort de guerre, a un moment ou la victoire des allies est loin d’etre acquise. Si ce conflit attire plusieurs critiques des citoyens de l’epoque, il reussit tout de meme a mobiliser des milliers de travailleurs ainsi que plusieurs centrales syndicales a travers le pays. La greve des mines d’or de Kirkland Lake fait l’objet de plusieurs remarques dans les ouvrages se rapportant a l’histoire du mouvement ouvrier canadien2.
