La Suisse partage, en matière de diversité des formes de vie conjugale, de nombreux traits communs aux autres pays occidentaux: baisse de la fécondité et de la nuptialité, recul de l'âge au mariage, hausse de la cohabitation. Elle présente aussi quelques caractéristiques particulières intéressantes, notamment un faible niveau de fécondité hors mariage. L'analyse d'une enquête sur la famille menée en 1994-1995 permet de décrire les relations entre mariage et première naissance et d'interpréter le maintien à un niveau élevé des naissances survenant dans le cadre du mariage alors que le nombre des unions consensuelles est en hausse. Les résultats montrent que les conceptions prénuptiales sont fréquentes, mais presque toujours suivies d'un mariage. Ces conceptions, qui furent l'apanage des ferrnmes ne vivant pas avec le père, concernent aujourd'hui des femmes en cohabitation. Naguère réparateur d'une grossesse non voulue, le malriage devient accompagnateur d'un projet de fécondité.
