Abstract
This paper explores the response in a small southern Ontario community to the loss of its heritage-designated grandstand. The methods of mourning throw into relief the active processes of community production, as they graft narratives onto the past, largely through photographic fragments, which subsequently become further objects of loss. The temporal-cultural dialectic composed of a lost idyll and contemporary social degradation synthesizes into the active aesthetic sculpting of the townscape, which physically inscribes mythological conceptions of the region’s past. These processes reveal the small-town ideal as a contemporary social myth rhetorically masked as communal, cultural history.
