Le Miroir, le Joyau et l’Épée constituent les trois « Trésors sacrés » de la monarchie japonaise, transmis de génération de souverains en génération de souverains depuis des temps immémoriaux au cours des cérémonies de succession. Le présent article retrace l’histoire complexe et les vicissitudes de ces trois emblèmes de leur apparition dans les mythes fondateurs de la nation jusqu’à nos jours. Il en souligne également la dimension idéologique comme symboles récurrents de la dignité, mais aussi de la légitimité monarchique, ainsi que des vertus attachées au gouvernement du prince. De ces objets, exploités avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale à des fins nationalistes pour exalter la spécificité du Japon en tant que nation élue par les dieux, nul ne connaît vraiment l’apparence réelle. Objets singuliers, car cachés à la vue des mortels, ils sont la marque d’une présence immanente, d’une autorité transcendante qui s’affranchit de toute ostentation.
