Par-delà les referents polysémiques de la tradition, le mouvement dit du "renouveau charismatique" témoigne d'une poussée individualiste et démocratisante dans l'univers catholique romain. Capitalisant sur un relâchement relatif des contrôles organisationnels et idéologiques après Vatican II, notamment sur la promotion du laïcat et de l'œcuménisme, les fidèles circulent à la poursuite de l'Esprit et des charismes. Le charisme se diffuse en devenant le "maître-symbole" d'un entrepreneurship sacral généralisé. Mais de dérive individualiste en exercice de dérivation contrôlée - l'Église tout entière est charismatique dira le pape - la trajectoire du mouvement marque les limites de la "nouvelle alliance" institutionnelle au monde contemporain.
