Généralement associée à l’espace public qu’elle tend à occuper ostensiblement (cafés, théâtres, boulevards), la bohème littéraire et artistique prend également place dans l’espace privé. Dans les textes où elle est représentée, qu’il s’agisse d'œuvres de fiction, de recueils d’anecdotes ou de livres de souvenirs, la mansarde occupe en effet un espace privilégié : le bohème y travaille, il y rencontre ses maîtresses et ses amis, tout en s’y mettant à l’abri de ses créanciers et de ses patrons. Bref, pour la bohème, l’intérieur représente un espace de socialisation alternative, complémentaire des lieux de sociabilité : c’est à l’étude ethnographique de cet imaginaire de l’intérieur bohème que convie le présent article.
