Abstract
퀘벡 문학이 존재하는지에 대한 질문은 이미 오래 전부터 있어왔지만, 그러한 질문은 오늘날 의미가 없어 보인다. 그 문학이 당연히 존재할 뿐만 아니라, 문학사적으로 고찰해보아도 지금처럼 건강한 상태에 있었던 적이 없기 때문이다. 그 변화를 추적하기 위해서는 비록 그 분할이 자의적일지라도, 문학이 역사와 이데올로기의 리듬에 따라 변화해온 일련의 시기에 대해 분류를 시도하지 않을 수 없다. 모든 역사가들과 사회학자들이 퀘벡사(史)에 있어 동일한 시기를 인정한다면 문제는 훨씬 쉬울 것이지만 현실은 그렇지 않다. 그러기에 우리는 이데올로기적이고 역사적인 분할을 동시에 고려하지 않을 수 없다. 분할 기준의 일부를 역사에서, 또다른 것들은 사회문화 운동으로부터 차용한 후 그 기준을 적절히 통합시켜볼 경우 퀘벡 문학의 발전 단계는 크게 다음의 6개 시기로 나눌 수 있다5) : \n제1기 : 누벨-프랑스(Nouvelle-France)의 작품들(1534～1763) \n제2기 : 애국문학(La littérature patriotique)(1763～1895) \n제3기 : 향토색(Le terroir)(1840～1945) \n제4기 : 대 암흑기(La grande noirceur)(1930～1960) \n제5기 : 조용한 혁명(1960～1980) \n제6기 : 포스트모더니즘(1980～현재) \n위에서 살펴볼 수 있는 것처럼, 제2기와 제3기는 50년 이상 중첩되는 모습을 보여주고 있으며, 제3기 역시 제4기와 10여 년 정도 겹치고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 1760년 이후 문학다운 문학이 시작되면서 프랑스어권 문학이 정체성을 확보해나가는 과정이 필연적으로 애국주의와 향토색을 동시에 수반할 수밖에 없는 점을 우리가 인정한다면, 위의 시기 구분은 자연스럽게 이해되어진다. 현재 진행형인 '포스트모더니즘'에 관련된 이야기를 별도로 친다 하더라도, 우리는 이 기준에 따라 초창기 문학부터 제5기까지 이르는 문학을 살펴보며 프랑스어권 캐나다가 스스로의 정체성을 문학을 통해 확보해나가는 과정을 고찰해볼 수 있다. 그리고 정체성 문제를 집중적으로 조망하려는 우리의 글에서는 ‘누벨-프랑스’, ‘애국문학’과 ‘조용한 혁명’ 부분이 상대적으로 상세히 다루어질 수밖에 없다.
