Abstract
Ballard Power Systems of Canada is the Titan, the co-ordinating major force in the international proton exchange fuel cell or polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) business. Best electrocatalysis yields maximum power density from minimum platinum loading. For a cathode platinum particle to be electrocatalytically effective, it must be in electrical contact with the conducting porous electrode structure. The Proton Exchange Fuel Cell (PEFC) fuel supply must be hydrogen from natural gas via a reformer on terra firma or on the vehicle. The Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC), currently a system of relatively low power density, has its vigorous protagonists, notably Methanex which would supply the methanol fuel.
