Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885) est une figure connue et appréciée de la gravure en France. Ses œuvres au style détaillé le place au confluent de plusieurs courants de la pensée esthétique en Europe au XIX e siècle. Proche du milieu littéraire, il incarne la figure de l’artiste bohème, tel que l’a dépeint Champfleury dans sa nouvelle Chien-Caillou (1845), appellation qui devint son pseudonyme. La carrière de Bresdin est marquée par l’itinérance. Dans son désir de trouver un environnement stable et peu coûteux pour vivre et créer l’amène à émigrer au Canada en 1873. Cet aspect de sa carrière a intéressé les nombreux chercheurs européens et américains qui l’ont étudié, mais l’accès aux sources rendait leur travail difficile. Un article paru dans La Presse le 28 octobre 1905 fournit des indices qui permettent de reconstituer quelques-uns des jalons du séjour de l’artiste et de sa famille (il avait 6 enfants) à Montréal. J’ai pu ainsi retracer une partie du réseau dans lequel Bresdin s’est inséré, principalement d’autres néo-canadiens d’origine française et identifier quelques nouvelles œuvres. Des aspects jusqu’alors inédits de son travail prennent forme, alors qu’on le voit s’intéresser à la caricature et à la gravure sur bois. Bresdin s’adonne également à l’enseignement tout en acceptant une commande pour les sulpiciens. Découragé par le manque de travail il retourne à Paris au printemps de 1877.
