Abstract
"To trace the evolution of the population of Montreal from the 1840s to the end of the century, we collected all baptisms, marriages, deaths and nominal census entries for 12 sample surnames. The sample is intended to permit matching, chaining, and a full reconstitution of several hundred families representative of each of the city's three principal cultural communities--French Canadian, protestant, and Irish catholic. The three communities functioned as distinctive subsystems, each with its own age-structure, vital rates, and behavioral patterns." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)
