Les études sur le revenu annuel avant et après la retraite visent à déterminer dans quelle mesure le revenu diminue à ce stade important de la vie. Bien que ces études aient une portée et un objet variables, on s'entend généralement pour dire que le régime canadien de revenu de retraite offre des taux de remplacement du revenu qui dépassent 60 % à 70 % pour un grand nombre de Canadiens, en particulier ceux qui avaient un faible revenu lorsqu'ils étaient dans la force de l'âge actif. Toutefois, peu de publications examinent dans quelle mesure les retraités conservent les mêmes niveaux de consommation. En s'appuyant sur les données de l'Enquête sur les dépenses des familles (EDF) et de l'Enquête sur les dépenses des ménages (EDM), la présente étude adopte une approche axée sur une cohorte synthétique afin de déterminer comment les habitudes de consommation des ménages dirigés par des personnes en fin de quarantaine (au début des années 1980) sont différentes de celles d'un groupe de ménages au début de la septantaine vers la fin des années 2000. L'étude conclut que même si la nature de la consommation évolue au fil du temps, les niveaux généraux de consommation « par adulte » ne se replient pas de façon importante chez les Canadiens au fil des années.
