Abstract
Résumé Les mouvements étudiants à la fin du XIX e siècle aiguisent leur critique de la société capitaliste, en se définissant un rôle et un espace de contestation propre, sur le terrain même de la critique de l’université. Se situant d’abord sur le terrain de la défense de la science, les groupes d’étudiants envisagent l’action politique comme l’affirmation de l’autonomie vaillamment conquise sur les partis socialistes. Empruntant à la contestation ouvrière ses méthodes et son vocabulaire, le mouvement étudiant se constitue alors comme un groupe autonome. Ce sont ces processus qui conduisent à la fondation de l’Unef par un petit groupe d’étudiants, fort politisés, même si l’Unef se proclama d’emblée apolitique, à l’instar des syndicats ouvriers.
