Abstract
Au cours des récentes décennies, la généalogie a gagné en popularité dans différents milieux tout en développant une méthodologie rigoureuse. Considérée comme une science auxiliaire de l’histoire, la généalogie a développé d’étroits rapports avec la démographie historique et l’histoire des populations. Du côté de la sociologie, c’est sous l’angle de la sociologie de la famille que les liens de collaboration semblent les plus évidents, plus particulièrement autour du concept de filiation, commun aux deux disciplines. Par ailleurs, la généalogie peut aussi être considérée comme un objet d’étude par les sociologues lorsqu’on l’aborde sous l’angle d’une pratique culturelle ou d’une activité liée à l’expression de l’identité personnelle, familiale et collective. Dès lors, la généalogie, telle que pratiquée au Québec par de nombreuses sociétés locales et régionales, incluant les rassemblements de familles-souches, devient l’expression d’une forme de transmission de la culture.
