Hace treinta y seis años, los investigadores Frederick Grant Banting y Best, de Toronto, logran aislar la insulina del páncreas y aplicarlo al tratamiento de la diabetes, se trata de la insulina corríente, natural, de acción rápida; pero por esta propiedad de ser de acción rápida es que se hace laborioso su manejo, requiere muchas inyecciones al día y se gasta mucha insulina, sembrando cierta desconfianza en los pacientes por los accidentes a que da lugar. Entonces hay que resolver el primer problema de la insulinización : Retardar la acción de la insulina, para cuyo efecto se le asocia a los vasoconstríctores, como las hormonas hipofisarias y la adrenalina, con lo que se prolonga su acción a las ocho horas, pero, endocrinólogos de ese tiempo como Umber, no la admiten como insulina de depósito, y es retirada del uso terapéutico.
