Chloroarene complexes undergo facile nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions with bisphenols and bisthiols to produce polymers with ether and thioether spacers in their backbones. Linear and star-shaped polymers were synthesized by the reaction of di- and tri-substituted nucleophiles, respectively. The incorporation of azobenzene moieties in the side chains of the organoiron polymers resulted in intensely colored materials. The cationic cyclopentadienyliron-coordinated polymers underwent reversible reduction processes from eighteen-electron to nineteen-electron species. By incorporating neutral ferrocene moieties into the backbones of polyethers and thioethers, it was also possible to electrochemically oxidize these polymers.
