Abstract
L'art conçu comme capital culturel est au centre des recherches de sociologues tels que Pierre Bourdieu et ce concept est pertinent à l'analyse des musées d'art dans la société contemporaine. À la différence du niveau d'instruction, le goût artistique se conçoit comme une affaire individuelle sans grande importance sociale. Je critique cette position à la lumière de l'étude de Bourdieu et Darbel concernant les publics des musées d'art, je compare leurs résultats avec ceux des recherches actuelles en Europe et aux États-Unis, et je mets en doute les preuves de la relation entre le goût et la mobilité sociale. Le musée d'art peut devenir un facteur de nivellement plutôt qu'une barrière à l'égalité, mais tant qu'il subsiste des inégalités en matière d'éducation et de profession, ce programme a peu de chances de se réaliser.
