Abstract
Pour sortir la sociologie empirique en général, et la sociologie de la mobilité sociale en particulier, de l'ornière où le néopositivisme l'a enfoncée, il ne suffit pas de changer de théorie; c'est la méthodologie aussi et surtout qu'il faut critiquer. C'est en effet sous la forme apparamment neutre et " scientifique " des techniques développées autour de la recherche par sondages que s'introduisent subrepticement les idées épistémologiques fondamentales du néo-positivisme: l'idée probabiliste, l'idée de relations entre variables, l'idée de preuve, l'idée que la société est finalement composée d'individus, et non de rapports sociaux; autant d'idées totalement opposées à une véritable approche sociologique. À ces approches, l'auteur propose de substituer, par exemple, l'étude du processus crucial qu'est la transmission du capital par l'héritage; plus généralement, il faut montrer que chaque classe possède son propre mécanisme de recrutement de ses agents parmi les fils de ses agents. Il faut recentrer l'analyse de la mobilité sur ce qui doit être son véritable objet, le mouvement historique des rapports sociaux.
