Abstract
Canada no puede escapar de su pasado. Las escuelas residenciales establecidas durante los siglos XIX y XX a manera de ley con el fin de asimilar a los ninos y jovenes indigenas dentro de la cultura oficial anglosajona y francesa, arrebato la identidad cultural y social de las primeras naciones. Mas aun, los efectos sociales en el largo plazo se han reflejado en conductas patologicas en las reservas indigenas, donde los indices de suicidio, drogadiccion y desintegracion familiar son mas elevados que en el resto de Canada. A pesar de que el gobierno y las iglesias han indemnizado economicamente a algunos de quienes forzaron a vivir la experiencia de las escuelas residenciales, sera muy dificil recuperar la cultura y el modo de vida que los nativos disfrutaron alguna vez
