Abstract
A cidade de Pelotas/RS, no século XIX, obteve um desenvolvimento econômico significativo proporcionado pelas atividades da indústria do charque. O jornalismo também pode ser considerado como um dos elementos que se incrementou a partir desse crescimento. O presente artigo visa a abordar questões relacionadas ao desenvolvimento urbano e ao tratamento dispensado pela administração pública à cidade através das críticas e sátiras presentes em três periódicos ilustrados e humorísticos que circularam nos anos 1880: Cabrion, Zé Povinho e A Ventarola. Analisando algumas das imagens que trataram dessa temática, evidenciou-se que ela foi abordada com a ótica do humor, revelando ao leitor uma outra cidade envolvida pelos \nproblemas da urbanização.
