Abstract

The microsporidia are one group of eukaryotes whose genomes are exceptional and “extreme.” In many ways, microsporidian genomes fit the canonical picture of a nuclear genome: they are composed of multiple linear chromosomes with telomeres. But in other ways, a general view of microsporidian genomes has emerged that more closely resemble those of bacteria: high gene density due to a paucity of introns and transposons, generally short intergenic regions, and few duplicated genes. Within microsporidia, the most extreme reduction in genomes has been found in species belonging to the genus Encephalitozoon. The actual complement of genes encoded in microsporidian genomes is remarkably similar from one species to another, regardless of genome size. Microsporidia acquires specific genes from unrelated lineages through horizontal gene transfer (HGT), and many of these genes have played a central role in microsporidian evolution.
