Abstract
Résumé Les études portant sur les stratégies familiales occupent une place importante en histoire de la famille. Ces études nous ont permis d’approfondir nos connaissances sur les stratégies pratiquées par les familles afin d’assurer leur survie économique. Concernant les chercheurs qui se sont intéressés aux populations minières, leurs travaux ont porté sur les taux de natalité élevés de ces communautés. Leurs conclusions mettent en avant la nature de l’économie minière qui n’offre que très peu d’emplois aux femmes, qui exige une main-d’œuvre masculine nombreuse et qui épuise rapidement les travailleurs. Avoir de nombreux enfants protège donc les familles de la misère. Cependant, à l’examen des recensements nominatifs d’une communauté minière du sud du pays de Galles, il est clair que cette stratégie n’est pas suffisante à elle seule. Les femmes jouent un rôle important, en hébergeant des pensionnaires lorsque les enfants ne participent pas au revenu familial.
