Abstract
Le refus de l’héritage amérindien fait partie des « fictions dominantes » dénoncées par Suzanne Jacob dans son essai La bulle d’encre . Elle en fait le thème central de son roman Rouge, mère et fils (2001) dont cet article analyse la composition (autour de la couleur rouge) et les principaux personnages : la mère Delphine, le fils Luc, le père Félix de même qu’un personnage extravagant, appelé le Trickster, par qui la mère et le fils retrouveront en fin de roman le fil de leur histoire, irriguée par le sang amérindien qui coule dans leurs veines. L’article met l’accent sur le changement de registre qui apparaît dans le dernier chapitre du roman, lequel délaisse le ton ironique employé jusque-là au profit d’une prose poétique et solennelle. En s’emparant d’un héritage détourné (celui du métissage amérindien refoulé par le discours identitaire québécois), le roman se voit lui-même détourné par cet héritage, au nom d’une demande de sens venue de l’extérieur du roman.
