Géographe de formation, Serge Gagnon enseigne à l’Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), au Département de travail social et des sciences sociales. Son livre, L’échiquier touristique québécois, est publié dans la collection Tourisme de l’éditeur Presses de l’Université du Québec. Cette publication met en valeur une science en émergence, la téorologie. Le livre de Serge Gagnon est une rencontre de la géographie, du tourisme et de l’histoire. Le champ spécialisé qui en découle, la géographie du tourisme, observe les mouvements des populations qui voyagent pour découvrir d’autres lieux. Ici, l’auteur étudie les limites spatiales liées aux flux humains et l’impact des décisions des acteurs sur l’organisation territoriale à travers le temps. Selon le dictionnaire Petit Robert, un échiquier est un lieu où se joue une partie serrée, où s’effectue une manœuvre, où s’opposent plusieurs intérêts, plusieurs partis. Cette métaphore résume les phénomènes touristiques au Québec et mentionne le rôle premier de l’espace sur lequel se posent ces interactions. Vouloir définir le tourisme, selon Serge Gagnon, c’est déterminer l’ensemble des caractéristiques qui appartiennent à un concept, la spatialisation du tourisme. Le tourisme est devenu si complexe que toute personne qui tente de le définir globalement se perdrait dans les multiples tentacules des champs spécialisés et le réduirait à un exposé squelettique. Gagnon apporte un nouvel élément de la compréhension globale du tourisme et de la villégiature au Québec.
