Beaucoup de jeunes confrontés à des difficultés familiales, sociales et éducatives au moment de leur placement restent toujours dans une situation de vulnérabilité une fois sortis du système de protection. À partir d’une revue de littérature internationale, nous présenterons en premier lieu une problématisation des enjeux auxquels les jeunes qui quittent un placement sont confrontés. Il s’agit de mettre en avant le cumul des difficultés lors des transitions tout autant que la nécessité du développement des soutiens afin de contrecarrer les inégalités auxquelles ces jeunes sont confrontés. Dans un second temps, l’article présentera les enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques des travaux inscrits dans la lignée des études sur le « devenir adulte », c’est-à-dire le devenir à long terme des jeunes placés, et plus spécifiquement sur la période de sortie du dispositif de protection de l’enfance. Partant des insuffisances des études internationales existantes, nous présenterons notre projet d’études longitudinales représentatives dans deux contextes nationaux, en France et au Québec.
