Abstract
Le catholicisme québécois est devenu discret. Quoiqu'il connaisse des taux de pratique de plus en plus bas, il représente une réalité culturelle incontournable. Tout en faisant état des données empiriques disponibles à son égard, tant qualitatives que quantitatives, l'auteur tente d'en réinterpréter l'histoire contemporaine. Il découvre alors un catholicisme populaire aux multiples facettes : engagements à la base, effervescence religieuse, communion émotionnelle, affirmation de valeurs universelles, éclatement de l'imaginaire. Ce catholicisme transgresse souvent l'institution qui l'a porté au monde. Celle-ci pourtant, quoiqu'aux prises avec sa propre quête d'identité, reste le réfèrent naturel de la quête de sens de la très grande majorité des citoyens.
