Abstract
O universalismo dos direitos humanos tem sido, e continua a ser, freqüentemente desafiado. Entre as várias objeções levantadas por críticos e por céticos, três argumentos se destacam. Primeiramente, os direitos humanos são vistos como uma manifestação exclusiva da cultura ocidental. Sugere-se que, uma vez que o conceito de direitos humanos emergiu historicamente na Europa, a sua reivindicação por uma validade universal inerente significaria uma forma moderna de imperialismo cultural. O segundo argumento baseia-se no pressuposto de que os direitos humanos são essencialmente individualistas e, portanto, incompatíveis com o espírito ético mais comunitário de algumas culturas não-ocidentais. Em terceiro lugar, uma vez que a noção de direitos humanos passou a ser concebida a partir de um foco antropocêntrico, sustenta-se que, a princípio, tais direitos são inaplicáveis aos povos ou às culturas que possuam uma visão de mundo teocêntrica ou cosmocêntrica. Eu gostaria de oferecer uma abordagem dos direitos humanos que possa responder a essas três principais objeções.
