O presente artigo relembra os 30 anos da assinatura da Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre o Direito do Mar (CNUDM), suas principais contribuições para a formação do direito internacional do mar e suas implicações para o Brasil. O artigo ainda apresenta o difícil trabalho de negociação do tratado na III Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre o Direito do Mar (1973-1982), o árduo processo até a ratificação e entrada em vigor da CNUDM, os novos espaços marítimos definidos pelo tratado e finaliza revendo a atuação da delegação brasileira no encontro e a consequência mais importante para o Brasil atualmente, o pleito a uma plataforma continental estendida
