Abstract
Cet article se propose de revenir sur l’héritage de mai 1968 sur l’histoire du théâtre et des institutions théâtrales françaises, en questionnant les malentendus et les héritages méconnus. Délaissant la question proprement esthétique, il s’agit davantage d’interroger les usages de la Déclaration de Villeurbanne, texte issu de l’assemblée des directeurs de théâtres publics, tenue à Villeurbanne, au Théâtre de la Cité, dirigé par Roger Planchon, en mai-juin 1968. Encore présente dans la mémoire des hommes de théâtre pour avoir institué la notion contestée de « non-public », la Déclaration de Villeurbanne peut-elle être accusée d’avoir marqué le début d’un abandon de la préoccupation du public ? Quel rôle a-t-elle eu sur la création d’une identité collective au réseau du théâtre public ?
