Abstract
Le présent article explore quelques-uns des enjeux méthodologiques que soulève la notion de « vie culturelle » sur laquelle repose le projet de recherche Penser l’histoire de la vie culturelle au Québec , dont l’objectif général est de préparer une histoire de la culture artistique au Québec de la fin du xix e au milieu du xx e siècle. La notion de culture qui fonde le projet sert d’abord à poser l’hypothèse de traits communs, récurrents et transversaux aux diverses disciplines artistiques et à briser l’isolement de ces disciplines instituées en étudiant la circulation des concepts et des schèmes cognitifs, ainsi que celle des figures, des formes et des thèmes plus spécifiques à notre objet. La notion de « vie » est là pour contrer celle de « structure » ; elle sert à introduire le mouvement, l’incertitude, l’inachèvement, l’incomplétude. Quatre problèmes sont envisagés plus spécifiquement : le temps comme altérité, la configuration de l’objet, la périodisation et le statut de l’oeuvre artistique.
