Résumé La plupart des études féministes voient dans la prostitution une expression de la masculinité ; or une telle perception néglige les différences entre les clients et les diverses significations sociales conférées à la fréquentation des prostituées. A partir d’entretiens approfondis avec des clients et des travailleuses du sexe à Taïwan, cet article se propose d’analyser le recours à la prostitution en prenant en compte la sexualité masculine et l’appartenance de classe des clients. Il montre comment les clients de différentes classes sociales vivent différemment leur relation sexuelle avec les prostituées ; comment ils négocient la contradiction entre la morale sociale construite autour de la prostitution, comme la stigmatisation des clients, ou la fidélité dans le mariage, et le fait de transformer les femmes en objets de transaction sexuelle. Néanmoins, l’article conteste l’idéologie qui explique la prostitution à Taïwan par "les pulsions sexuelles des hommes" et démontre qu’en fait, la consommation sexuelle est en partie très planifiée, spécialement par les hommes socialement considérés de la classe moyenne. L’article montre surtout que les demandes émotionnelles des clients, qui ne se limitent pas pour eux au sexe, sont très étroitement liées à la façon dont ils conçoivent le plaisir sexuel.
