Abstract
L’exposition Benjamin-Constant (1845-1902). Merveilles et mirages de l’orientalisme qui a eu lieu au Musée des Augustins de Toulouse à l’automne-hiver 2014-15 et au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Canada, à l’hiver et au printemps 2015, organisée sous l'égide du French Regional American Museum Exchange (FRAME), est l’occasion de mettre en lumière les liens qu’entretenait Benjamin-Constant avec le monde anglophone. Après sa période orientaliste, la renommée de ce peintre élevé à Toulouse s’est largement accrue lors de ses voyages aux Etats-Unis et en Angleterre. Aux Etats-Unis, il alla faire fortune en déployant son art du portrait auprès des familles patriciennes et des magnats de l’industrie. Ces voyages outre-Atlantique, rares à l’époque, témoignent de son esprit hardi et aventurier. En Angleterre, la commande la plus prestigieuse qui lui revint fut le portrait de la Reine Victoria, peu avant le Jubilé royal.
