Abstract
Le cocuage est le volet festif, symbolique et mythique de l’adultère. A la fin du Moyen Age et à la Renaissance, il occupe une place considérable dans les fêtes, les chansons, le théâtre et la littérature –des fabliaux aux nouvelles françaises et italiennes. En Occident, le cocu est un grand personnage de la fête et des rites populaires. En particulier, il est étroitement associé aux festivités du carnaval. Le cocu possède plusieurs visages. Il apparaît comme une sorte de divinité associée aux rites printaniers de fécondité. Mais c’est aussi une figure tutélaire du compagnonnage : les « bons compagnons », qui pratiquent une sexualité débridée (prostitution, adultère…), forment une mythique confrérie masculine. La femme, partagée, sert de médiatrice entre des mâles qui ne rêvent que de se passer d’elle…
